Nottingham Trent University Chiller Project

The clients design and specification called for the removal of the existing roof mounted chiller serving the maternity unit which had failed and replacing it with two packaged air-cooled chiller units.

This project, by its nature was located on a site, which was within an occupied and operating hospital. The daily function of all occupants/users had to continue unimpeded throughout the duration of the works. All work on the chilled water system had to be carefully planned and co-ordinated. This called for a high level of collaboration between the key stakeholders, the clients professional team and Acorn MPS.

The management and planning of the works had to consider and cater for the inherent risks of working in a live hospital environment such as:

• Isolation procedures
• Crane lift operations
• Work in occupied areas
• Sequencing of operations
• Installations techniques in occupied areas
• Out of hours working
• Emergency procedures
• COSHH and infection risk management.

The scope of supply, installation, testing and commissioning included the following services:

• Installation of 2 No. Roof Mounted Chillers
• Purpose designed and fabricated support steelwork
• Chilled water pipework installation and modification to existing services
• BMS Controls
• Electrical Installation
• Testing and commissioning.
